History

Alternative Family Treatment Services, Inc. (AFTS) opened its doors to provide Intensive Home Based Services on April 1, 1994. As the owner, Betty Gray-Henson, being one of the founding pioneers to bring Home Based Services to the City of Norfolk, with a vision to provide comprehensive mental and behavioral health services to at risk youth and families in the Hampton Roads area.

Alternative Family Treatment Services (AFTS) has been committed to our vision of “Learn, Develop and Release” that promotes connecting with community, servicing the people’s needs, growing through learning and giving back to others.

After twenty years of service delivery to the City of Norfolk, AFTS and other Intensive In-Home Services providers in the City of Norfolk have declared April 1st as the day that all families and children are focused on as having “strengths, unity and perseverance”. AFTS looks to provide an organization wherein the many Worker’s known as Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP’s), Family Workers, Mentors, and Counselors will take time to help a fatherless child, deter a gang member, stop runaways, impede child abuse or neglect, or even support a family that may be hungry, homeless and or grieving. Though the names may have changed, the vision and the purpose remains the same, Intensive In-Home, or Home Based Services, means to preserve children and families anyway we can, regardless of the time or day. Every child is worth saving!!!!!
